The Congo American Language Institute (CALI) is a program of the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
CALI has provided quality English instruction to government officials, students preparing for studies abroad, and other professionals since 1962.
CALI offers a six level program of English instruction: beginner to advanced. A certificate is given upon successful completion of level 4 (upper-intermediate) and a second certificate upon successful completion of level 6 (upper-advanced). These courses are offered on a semi-intensive and intensive basis in 10 week cycles.
Semi-intensive courses meet two times a week, five hours a week for a total of 50 hours of instruction. Semi-intensive courses cost $130.00 USD which includes books.
Intensive courses meet five times a week, 10 hours a week for a total of 100 hours. Intensive courses cost $210.00 USD which includes books.
There are four sessions a year with two week breaks between sessions.
For students who have completed level six or are advanced English speakers, CALI offers the following courses:
Business English I and II
Advanced Conversation I and II
TOEFL Preparation
SAT Preparation
With the exception of the TOEFL Preparation Class which meets 5 days a week for a total of 100 hours of instruction, the other courses meet twice a week for a total of 40 hours per session. The TOEFL and SAT Preparation Classes cost $200.00 USD. The other courses cost $100.00 USD.
In addition to on-site courses, CALI also offers classes to businesses off-site. Presently, CALI has off-site courses with several international companies, government agencies and NGO’s.
CALI also offers an outreach program for deaf students, and the course is offered by a local NGO, The Silent Cooperative. This has not only allowed assistance to the handicap community in kinshasa, but through the program has resulted in undergraduate scholarships at Gallaudet University in washington, D.C. for the best students in this unique community.
One of CALI’s major assets is the dedication and expertise of its staff. The majority of the staff has been with CALI for at least 8 years. Furthermore, 52% of the teaching staff hold PhDs or Masters from US or European universities. The others hold MA and BA degrees from the DRC or other countries. All have extensive ESL/EFL experience.
CALI serves as an important bridge between the cultures of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the United States. The institute has an average of 600 students per session, and several high-ranking government officials, businessmen, and basketball star Mutombo Dikembe are graduates of CALI.
