School Principals’ Incentives for Excellence Awards 2005 (Western Cape)
Nominations are sought for principals of primary, intermediate or secondary schools in the Western Cape, who have achieved excellence within their schools. Entries will close on 15 February 2005 and the five winning principals will be announced on 30 March 2005.
The School Principals’ Incentive for Excellence will be awarded in March 2005 to school principals who attain excellence in Western Cape schools. There are five awards of R20 000 each – with R5000.00 in cash for the principal and R15 000.00 for the school for educatative purposes.
Nomination Guidelines
Nominee Eligibility
Nominees must be principals of public primary, intermediate or high schools registered with the Department of Education.
Nominees must have been a principal at the school for a period of at least 2 years.
The school must have achieved significant improvement since the nominated principal’s appointment.
Nominator Qualifications
The nominator should have direct knowledge of the nominated principal’s work.
The nominator may not be a family member of the nominee.
Evaluation Criteria
Since the award is not a grant, nomination material should emphasise the principal’s accomplishments rather than future goals. Both historic and current performance should be addressed. The following are suggested criteria to consider in describing your Nominee’s work:
Contributions towards the development and improvement of the school
Record of achievement of the nominee
(Possible areas for inclusion: support to school management, educators, parents and community, attendance rate of educators and learners, fundraising initiatives and additional resources for the school, governance structures established, participation in extra curricular activities, improvement in the school functionality and improvement on learner pass rates)
Innovation in area of work
Organisational capacity and administrative efficiency
Demonstration of impact
Nomination Process
The Identification Sheet below must be completed, signed by the nominator, and returned. If the identification sheet is submitted via e-mail, a copy must also be sent via facsimile or mail as the signature of the nominator must be on file.
A personal Nominating Letter in English, not to exceed five typed pages, should cite the reasons the nominee deserves to be awarded the Incentive for Excellence Award. Any additional materials submitted will be retained by The Shuttleworth Foundation and will not be returned.
Multiple nominations are not encouraged, although more than one person can sign a nomination letter. If more than one nomination is received for a principal, the earliest will be the first nomination of record. Any other nominations will be registered as letters of support; however, no more than three letters of support will be recorded.
Once the nomination has been received, the Shuttleworth Foundation may require additional support material from the nominee. The Foundation will contact the nominee directly for this information.
